Find information about Our Lady of the Lake University forensic nursing, registering for degree programs, and taking free tests online. Nursing is one of the fastest-growing job areas, and for good reason. As the population ages, medical care will continue to expand. If you complete the forensic nursing program, for example, there are a variety of concentrations that may appeal to you such as clinical research, forensics, or occupational rehabilitation. Check with the nursing department for an updated schedule of classes, registration deadlines, and a list of forensic nursing program requirements. Due to advances in medical systems, there is a growing skill-shortage of trained forensic nurses, and of qualified medical personnel in general. Please use the form above to request admissions info for Our Lady of the Lake University.

To become a Registered Nurse (RN), you will be required to take courses in medical terminology, patient care and life sciences. Although associate degree programs provide students with adequate nursing training, the forensic nursing program provides greater clinical exposure and a stronger general education. An RN has to cope with more responsibility, and must oversee the work of LPNs and CNAs under their supervision. Job openings in forensic nursing are projected to grow 25% over the coming decade. The average salary for nurses with an associates degree was $43,700 in 2015, while forensic nurses with a bachelors degree earned $67,490 per year.

Certification requirements include board certification by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP). The license period for the forensic nursing program varies by individual state, but is usually valid for either two or three years. Registered nurses (RNs) are not required to be certified in a particular specialty by state law. For example, it isn't necessary to be a Certified Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse (CMSRN) to work on a hospital forensic nursing floor, and most MedSurg nurses are not CMSRNs. There are a fixed number of credits that each state requires, and if you work in a hospital facility, an accelerated BSN program may be offered on-site.

Medical Imaging Technician Programs

An X-Ray Scan utilizes a collimated X-ray beam to produce an image on film. Several different views are obtained of the body part being imaged. The films are then passed on for review by a radiologist and your primary care physician. This is the oldest method of imaging, but is still the standard in general medical practice. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), on the other hand, provides detailed pictures of the body without ionizing radiation. During this procedure, the patient is placed within a large magnet and radio waves are passed through the body. Computer-generated images clearly show diseased tissue in the brain, spine, and joints.

For further definition, a Cat Scan utilizes a high tech, 16-slice scanner. The computer is able to render different perspectives, in order that the image may be viewed in various planes. Images appear on the technologist?s monitor in a matter of seconds, and because there is no waiting for film to be developed it reduces the need for repeat exams. Digital images are easily stored and transferred, eliminating the dependency on one set of originals, which can be misfiled or otherwise lost.
