Get the facts about Agnes Scott College forensic nursing, registering for elective courses, and taking free practice exams online. Whether you are considering an associates degree (CNA, LVN, or LPN), or a bachelor of science in nursing (RN), you will find many doors opening after graduation. If you complete the forensic nursing program, for example, there are a variety of concentrations that may appeal to you such as clinical research, forensics, or occupational rehabilitation. Check with the nursing department for an updated schedule of classes, registration deadlines, and a list of forensic nursing program requirements. Due to advances in medical systems, there is a growing skill-shortage of trained forensic nurses, and of qualified medical personnel in general. Please use the form above to request admissions info for Agnes Scott College.

To become a Registered Nurse (RN), you will be required to take courses in medical terminology, patient care and life sciences. Although associate degree programs provide students with adequate nursing training, the forensic nursing program provides greater clinical exposure and a stronger general education. An RN has to cope with more responsibility, and must oversee the work of LPNs and CNAs under their supervision. Job openings in forensic nursing are projected to grow 25% over the coming decade. The average salary for nurses with an associates degree was $43,700 in 2015, while forensic nurses with a bachelors degree earned $67,490 per year.

Certification requirements include board certification by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP). The license period for the forensic nursing program varies by individual state, but is usually valid for either two or three years. Registered nurses (RNs) are not required to be certified in a particular specialty by state law. For example, it isn't necessary to be a Certified Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse (CMSRN) to work on a hospital forensic nursing floor, and most MedSurg nurses are not CMSRNs. There are a fixed number of credits that each state requires, and if you work in a hospital facility, an accelerated BSN program may be offered on-site.

Occupational Therapist Assistant

Occupational therapy assistants and aides help patients develop, recover, and are directly involved in providing therapy to patients. Occupational therapy assistants need an associate's degree from an accredited program. There are roughly 200 occupational therapy assistant programs accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education, a branch of the American Occupational Therapy Association. These programs generally require 2 years of full-time study and include instruction in subjects such as psychology, biology, and pediatric health. In addition to taking coursework, occupational therapy assistants must complete at least 16 weeks of fieldwork to gain hands-on work experience.

Licensure requires the completion of all fieldwork requirements, and passing the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) exam, in order to use the title Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA). The median annual wage for occupational therapy assistants and aides was $54,520 in May 2015. Employment of occupational therapy assistants and aides is projected to grow 40 percent over the next 10 years, a fast-growing field with good opportunities, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.
